What is the difference between 1234, 3456 and 4567?MCDB 1234 is the intro course for students with limited or no prior lab experience. MCDB 3456 is the upper division course suitable for students who have taken 1234 or have some prior lab experience. MCDB 4567 is an independent research project performed in the skills center with supervision from a linked lab faculty and requires prior approval.    
How many skills can I work on at once?There is no limit to how many skills you can work on, however you cannot book multiple lab resources at the same time.
How much time (on average) should I expect to commit to learning a new skill?Each skill has module hours assigned which is the average number of hours required to complete the skill. Be aware that intermediate and advanced skills have prerequisites (PRQs). The hours required to complete the PRQ skills are not included in the total hours to complete an intermediate or advanced skill. 
What do I need to do to make my module hours count for university credit?As long as you complete 12.5 modules hours you will receive ONE university credit. Module hours can rollover from semester to semester so you can receive credit hours for extra module hours in a subsequent semester. 
What if I have learned skills outside the skills center? Do I need to repeat it?If you have learned a beginner or advanced skill outside the Skills Center please discuss with a proctor to provide certification so that you can fulfill any PRQs for a targeted skill.  In general most students with prior experience can complete a lab MMT in less time than it takes a proctor to certify a student.
Do I need to reserve wet lab module center facilities? All wet lab modules require you to book facilities in advance using the online booking system. You can request booking access online at the booking system or ask a proctor to activate your account.
Can I start working on skills prior to registering for the class?Skills Center resources are only available for registered students. 
Do I need a cluster market profile to reserve resrouces?Yes. You must create a login using your CU email. There is no organizational account.
Do I need to complete 12.5 modules hours for each credit hour or can I complete them in a subsequent semester?Yes. You must complete the number of modules hours that corresponds to the credit hours you have registered for the class in the same semester.
Where is the Skills Center?The Skill Center base camp is located in B044 of the Porter Bioscience Building.
When is the Skills Center available?The Skill Center is available for student use during proctor hours or upon prior arrangement with a proctor. 
Who runs the Skills Center?The Skills Center is operated and organized by the faculty and student proctors.
Can I become a proctor?Students who have successfully completed a large number of modules or who have obtained sufficient lab skills outside the Skills Center should contact a proctor to discuss.  
What should I do if the SOP does not match available equipment or supplies?Every lab environment is different and the ability to use critical thinking, creative problem solving, collaboration and patience are all skills needed to complete an MMT.  If something is not clear discuss with a proctor for guidance.
I am not registered as a full-time undergraduate student at CU Boulder. Am I eligible to apply for a skills course?Any registered CU Boulder student, part-time or full-time can register for MCDB 1234/3456/4567. If you are not a registered CU Boulder student you can register through CU Continuing Education and begin using the skill center.
